General:: Chrome wire wheels 53-56
Packard postwar chrome wire wheels had slightly thicker rims by definition. The triple plating process alone would make any rim thicker. And of course spoke wheel rims are put to stresses that ordinary disc wheels are not. So a somewhat heavier gauge of the rim itself also makes plenty of sense.

As for the matter of balancing these wheels, today in the 21st century there are so many ways to attach weights including ways to make them not look obvious or different... or visible at all in some cases. In reference to the Packard Service Counselor notes... there was–mentioned or not–the added issue of attaching (and maintaing grip) of a lead weight to a spinning, slippery new chrome rim, plus the thickness.

By the way, these wheels are so often referred to as "Kelsey-Hayes" but they were actually made by Motor Wheel Corporation. Cadillacs of the same era used K-H and you can easily see the differences by simply looking at the wheels and how they are laced. The Packard wire wheels were much stronger.

As for radial tires on these wheels, I am unsure what "stresses" radials would cause. Since bias-ply tires "squirm" down the road and radial tires "moosh" down the road, I fail to see why radials would pose undue "stresses" since they actually roll smoother! They just don't look quite as cool and beautiful as old bias-ply Firestones or Good Years or General Nygen whitewalls!

Makes it a lot easier.

Agreed, but I have enough trouble as it is putting things I've already removed back on -- without even thinking about trying to take the hood off. The piece missing so the hood is loose is the top splasher and latch. Once the AC is charged and no leaks around condenser area, will install it. Since I'm on the 24-24 plan (24 minutes working, 24 hours recuperating), that ought to be another 6 months.

I have decided to press my 288 L8 into service and I am hoping to keep it a fairly low budget build up (unlike my 52 327). I'm planning to build my own intake manifold and do a good rebuild on the engine and do something fancy to the exhaust and if i can find someone who will touch it regrind the cam. I'm wondering if anyone has made a custom intake for the L8 before and what their experience was I want more of a hot rod look than the stock 4bbl and the original Edmunds 2X2 is out of the budget for this build any help would be great.

Post-War (1946-54):: 1947 Super Clipper idle problem
Dear Packard1949:

The technical term for your problem is called a "coast down stall". In computer controlled engines these are usually confined to problems at the air intake. That should provide a few clues.

My guess is that you have dirt in the idle circuit of your carburetor. This is supported by the motor running worse when you remove the air cleaner. I would try racing the motor and momentarily placing your hand over the carburetor. The suction will help disldoge any dirt in the air bleeds. If the car runs better then you have a dirt problem. Air leaks can also cause a coast down stall, which may be rememdied by careful tightening of the screws that hold the base to the float bowl section.

Whomever sold you the Mighty-Vac made a good recommendation as the unit is fine for checking motor vacuum. Your idle vacuum should be between 17-21 inhg. Your readings of 11-14 are low so I would do a compression test. If the static compression is good (100 or higher) then your timing chain may be worn or you may have a vacuum leak. Usually those readings due to vacuum leaks would also have significant driveability problems.

I have a really sensitive vacuum gauge that I store in a foam lined box, I don't use it except when I need to look at mechanical problems like weak valve springs, broken rings, low cylinders, and faulty ignition.

There is another possibility and that is a problem with the overdrive relay. When these relays get old the ignition interruptor sticks and kills the motor. This is that extra wire on points side of the coil. It can be disconnected and the overdrive will still work.

Re: polarizing the generator? [by Tim Cole]

General:: polarizing the generator?
Hi folks

Before everybody starts poking around their voltage regulator and manually closing contacts let's look at what is actually going on with this polarization stuff.

Firstly, if the cutout is closed with the motor off the ammeter needle will be buried or the the Gen light will be on so you don't have to take the cover off the regulator.
In either case not disconnecting the battery will result in a fire. Sticking regulator cutouts on old regualtors are one of the reasons disconnect switches became popular

What polarize means is to momentarily feed battery voltage to the generator armature. That is A - armature and B - battery. The field terminal (F) is a pulse modulated ground and should not be used.

This procedure is highlighted in the Delco Manual, but they don't say what it actually does other than to say that not polarizing the generator after the battery is disconnected can result in "severe damage". This is of course contrary to mass experience because, were it true, every car with a disconnect switch would burn up.

Usually what happens is that the generator doesn't charge until it is properly polarized.

So just what is Polarize? The regulator has dual windings around a soft iron core. When battery voltage is manually applied to the armature the north and south poles of these soft iron cores are established which allows generator voltage to close the cutout.

Hope this helps

General:: Using classics as a business
I didn't mean to hijack this discussion with the Sheik of Kuwait Packard. I guess it is related as this car was a predecessor to the wine tour Custom Super Clippers -- which are definitely using classics (modified as they are) as a business.

Okay, the reason for the extended trunk area. The sheik specified that his Packard be longer than the neighboring sheik's car. No less than 21 or 22 feet (its in the Derham papers that are posted on this site). Derham extended the front bumper (to accomodate a siren that is barely visible in the Derham photo),and fabricated the rather odd trunk extension to satisfy the sheik's vanity.

Project Blogs:: Wade's Workshop
Friday 3rd February 2012

Low key time at the workshop this morning. But on Wednesday, after Noel and I left, Wade had removed the front brake drums from Fleurette and found a seal problem on the right side with grease on the linings then cleaned it all up and adjusted the brakes all round. This morning though, before turning to Fleurette, Wade gave Big Red some attention in replacing the hydraulic stop light switch, silicone brake fluid having again made the switch on Big Red inoperative. After checking the trans and OD oil levels and topping up the OD, the trans being OK, went for a test run in Fleurette. Brakes are a lot better, although still tending to pull slightly left. Thoughts are, a drum may be overly worn, bell shaped, ovoid or a combination of some or all of these conditions. Didn't have time to check that out, by swapping drums side to side, because Noel needs Fleurette tomorrow. Noel's doing a favour for a mate who's daughter is being married, and was picking her(Fleurette) up a little later in the morning.

Without the advantage of time, looked at starting installation of the radio that Wade rebuilt recently in Fleurette. Only did the speaker box though, because there weren't any problems doing that, there being two holes in the firewall corresponding exactly with the mounting holes required. All that was needed was to drill through the insulation and carpet to provide access for the mounting bolts. The radio head however presents as a problem. Although Fleurette currently has a radio head mounted in the dash it is a different type to the one replacing it. The current head has a square station wavelength dial in the middle flanked by a knob on either side. The replacement radio head has these same features as well as a square button on the left and a drum dial on the right. These added features operate the five station pre-set option. The problem arises because although the dash structure has the cutouts for the pre-set button and dial t...

The 356 motor hydraulic lifters used to interchange to White truck motors which were Packard Six with hydraulic lifters. We were always able to get those, but supplies were limited.

Tim, can you advise your source for this information?

I don't know much about the 1T-245 engines sold to White for the 3014 and 3015 series trucks except that about 7500 were provided between 1950 and 1962. The one White ad I do have (excerpt below) says in the specifications that the lifters were "adjustable" which to me means mechanical lifters. I suppose that could have changed over the course of the years and that ad is undated. Thus my interest.

Hi, Pat,

Replacing lifters (yes, lifters and tappets are somewhat interchangeable terms) one at a time can work. If the cam lobe surfaces are good, new lifters on an old cam is fine.

Because Packard V8s use soft valve springs, cam lobe wear is not common, but not unheard of. If the cam lobe is worn, usually when the lifter is removed, there will be corresponding wear on the lifter face.

If you need them, I've got NOS lifters at $10 each.

jack vines

More progress over the last few days. The steering wheel is pulled, engine electrics removed, fuel tank and exhaust off, parking brake disconnected, kickpanel plates removed, and probably a few other things. I think I have to remove the rear bumper still and after that, as far as I can tell the body is ready for lift off. Very exciting.

The further I dig the more astonished I am that I drove this car home. Take a wild guess what that modern wire wrapped around the insulation free coil wire was powering. Note, this is in as-bought and driven condition... ready? Fuel pump.

And this one was a bit of fun. There was a spare guard from fork truck laying around and it just so happens to fit almost exactly in between the frame rails. If we were going Mad Max with this build this would definitely end up as the grille. As it is, onward and upward!

Post-War (1946-54):: Radiator interchangability
David, I also recored the radiator on my 1947 Clipper Custom with a modern design core while retaining the upper and lower tanks. It helped the cooling tremendously. Packard used a rubber washer mounting system for its radiators on the 24th thru 56th series cars. Look at my project blog (Adventures with a 1955 Clipper) for a description of how I adapted modern parts to substitute for originals.

(o[]o)

Been there, done that.
I ended up getting a block of brass and drilling it to slide over the shaft and tapping for a set-screw to hold it on. Now I can take it on/off and even make adjustments to the angle at-will.
-Dave

Pre-War (1899-1942):: converting from Houdaille to Delco shocks
Just an update on the progress of my shock issue...

Apple Hydraulics sold me four rebuilt Delco shocks, fronts and rears, to replace the Houdailles. Other than different length mounting bolts, they went on easily. Just recently finished the total job on the front end, from the steering box rebuild all the way to the tie rod ends were replaced or rebushed. Changed all the drivetrain seals too. Rear shocks were swapped to Delcos. Used lots of POR15 chassis paint also. Recommend that stuff.
Car rides fine, handles bumps well and no issues with the Delcos. Nice to have a normal car again. Apple Hydraulics did not want my old Houdes as cores because no other vehicles use them other than mine. No problem. I recommend Apple Hydraulics if you need their services.

I do have a few other questions needing help that I'll post separately. Thanks to all that helped with this project.

DJ

Modification Discussion:: La Carrera Packard engine
G'day all, what a fantastic thread. In 1967, I purchased a 1952-200 which a previous owner had fitted a 62.5 thou bored out 327 with a shaved head and stick shift Packard R11 and 3.23 rear end. It ran the original carb with bigger jets, and I am still amazed at the performance of the car which I demolished in a fall asleep while driving adventure in 1969. I towed a car trailer at over 100mph regularly and the speedo used to go right around to the zero stop while the car speed kept increasing. ( I would estimate that it did around 115 (180 KPH) under ideal conditions, but sensational for a sedan in those days. It was awesome and not many fun ( Police) on the roads either. Now, as a Senior, I am more relaxed in the genital area and the Hyundais regularly get me at the lights in my 38 Packard hot rod. But never in my Mazda 13B Turbo RX3 which runs 10.9 quarters. Best Regards and love the thread. Peter Toet

Hi Barrie and thanks for reply - much appreciated.

Nice to know one of these kits is fitted to your car - so they DO work.

Please let me know if it is a Roto-Lokit kit (if you can find the box that is !! - know I can't ever find anything despite everyone saying how tidy I am.)

Photo taken last week at my Restorer's Shop - indoors so colours seem a lot brighter than they are in reality.

Reference wear and tear : got to remember first owner (Tobacco Famer in Rhodesia) scrapped this car back in 1968 when it was just 20 years old - he obviously thought that he had worn it out, so I think doors not shutting properly 40 or so more years later can be forgiven !!

Michael

I feel a little bit safer with that. Just my opinion.

Good luck,

Mark

Hi Mark,

I believe most new car transporters use chains & binders attached to engineered anchor points on the frame (or underbody) of modern cars. This cinches them down tight and so little movement is possible that I doubt that driveline strain or loading would be a problem. Without those anchor points, we are pretty much limited to using the axles as tie-down points on our older cars. As well as HD ratchet straps, I always set one safety chain front & rear with a few inches of slack in it.

Post-War (1946-54):: bushings for shift idler lever?
packardkelly, another thing to check for smoother shifting is the clutch anti-chatter rod. The rod is secured to the transmission and a cross member with brackets. The rod is adjustable so as to take-out slack. The problem is the rubber bushings wear and go bad over time and with exposure to the elements and oil. I replaced the rubber bushings on my 47 Custom Clipper and the improvement in shifting was remarkable. Plus, the clutch chatter I was getting when backing was all but eliminated. I used shock absorber bushings, but vendors sell correct replacements.

Watch out for the aliens, they will get into your Packard and cause all kinds of problems.

(o[]o)

Hi Folks:

Even with the Ultramatic the trans should be able to stay in the car.

I always use guide pins to prevent damaging flex plates on Automatics and the clutch Marcel on manuals.

If you make up pins from long bolts then you can slide the whole unit back far enough to lower the crankshaft. Of course on the manual the mounts and OD solenoid need to be removed.

This job is such a problem, and given the Packard crankshaft has a slinger I'm still inclined to use dowels to re-seat the existing upper seal and add more material.

Also, if the upper portion is leaking due to main bearing wear, then some careful application of shim stock may correct the situation.

Given a motor with this condition is already worn I don't see the benefit in risking crankshaft damage for the sake of overkill. One thing about Packard Eights, cars I have driven that have never had the crankshaft tampered with always seem to run smoother than the best rebuilts. That long crankshaft is very delicate.

Quote:

the clattery noise I hear going up hills must be the ping you guys are talking about! sounds like something metalic is broken or rattling around in the engine but only up a hill like a bolt in a coffee can - this definatly got better with each improvement in the engine tune in terms of ignition wires, timing, especially the timing; I was at 12 btdc now 6 per spec

Exactly. Since you're willing to modify the car, consider the GM HEI distributor conversion and a hotter coil. The flathead needs the most accurate and strongest spark it can get. Not only that, but many of the Packard distributors I see have worn bearings, worn centrifugal advance and perished vacuum diaphragms. A new HEI fixes all those problems as well.

Quote:

I guess an air cleaner,is the wcfb an oil bath again. Does a later paper element breath better?

Yes, the oil bath works just fine and filters as well or better than the paper.

No, if anything, the paper filter has more restriction, but it's not enough to make any difference.

Maybe, consider a split exhaust manifold and dual pipes.
General:: New emissions standards.
Couldn't agree more. We can and do go nuts out here but unfortunately, in this case I think most of California is caught between two unmoving rocks --the EPA and their surrogate the Air Resources Board, and two hard places -- geography and prevailing winds.

This is just the latest attempt to satisfy the federal EPA which has levied massive fines for failure to clean the air enough -- standards which even half the population number couldn't meet.

No matter how clean the engine, winds blow whatever they emit over a few low mountain ranges into pockets where it can't escape because it runs into a big mountain. That large ozone or particulate number in the stagnant pockets is all the EPA sees or cares about--no matter the reason it's high. This time the hope is that a few million electric cars won't spit anything out and enough of those Chevys (which have many tame politicians on the payroll protecting their interests) can keep running. One of the past plans would have gone after some of those cars that were "modern" yet high polluters but the campaign contributions were paid in time so it was gutted. The cars are just the tip of the problem but very easy to target.

The other states which follow California auto standards are just along for the ride. I suppose they are free to opt out if plan is of no benefit to them. Manufactures though are pushing for a nationwide plan because they only want to build to one standard and right now, California Air Resources Board is setting it. I'm sure the EPA is delighted. Electric cars also help their CAFE number so now with a few tweaks stretching the time frame and the fact most will have a model to sell by then, they're all for a mandate.

Thanks for that link. You can tell quite a bit about the starts based on their rides. I like the low-key approach of Johnny Weissmuller in his Chevrolet, Jimmy Stewart hangin' with his Plymouth and Ginger Rogers looking very satisfied with her tastefully understated Plymouth. They don't seem to have to look so stern and in-control, (or nuts and out-of-control) as some of the others.

Talk about stern: Erich Von Stroheim is obviously having none of zizz monkeybissness.

Back in my younger days (long ago and far away), I converted a 52 mayfair to stick with OD and put a four-barrel manifold and carb on the engine. Made it a floor-shift. Had to make an extension on the carb linkage to reach the full throw. Took the two wires from the carb start switch and connected to the back-up switch on the ultramatic linkage - I had already removed the back-up lights.
So you turned on the key, slipped in the clutch, and threw the ultra lever into reverse till the car started, slipped that into Park and shifted gears on the floor.
My wife passed her driver's test in that car. The State cop said he should have passed her as soon as she got it started and pulled out.

Post-War (1946-54):: Limo question
As for where the limo heater pics up the freshair is somewhat of a moot point. Our 56's pic up freash air at the front grill level rite there pointed at the cars exhaust pipe in front of us.

Isn't that the truth. Problem is except for that heater with the cowl vent option, Packard didn't offer fresh air heaters until mid 48.

Gene, In the second photo the small box has 3- rear deck latch assy and are marked GM, also there is a headlite relay (Delco) and a Defroster switch. The first photo shows the GM visor/vanity mirror and a glare shield for inside rear view mirror which might work for you. Thanks

That is correct. I have done it both ways, and option 2 is certainly easier. You are also much less likely to bang up the rod bearings.

Tom

General:: Good Packard books just listed on eBay
The AACA Library is selling several duplicate books from its collection. Here is a listing of all the books they've got up right now, including a few Packard books.
http://www.ebay.com/sch/aacalibrarian/m.html?autorefresh=true&item=130632203483&sspagename=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p3984.m1426.l2649&_trksid=p4340.l2562

Post-War (1946-54):: engine wont turn over!! help!!!
Woo hoo!!! Solved the problem!! The bushing I had made was a little thick, so I turned it down on the lathe until it seemed good on the input shaft. After the trans went back on everything felt good, turned easily, and disengaged as it should. Thanks for all the help!!!

Sorry to those that read this earlier...... I wrote it while on my phone and the darn auto-correct butchered it... My apologies.
