The Packard Bookshelf While plenty of books have been written about Packard since the last one rolled off the line, many enthusiasts - both new and old - often ask the same question: "Read any good books lately?" You could try searching the Internet, looking for any title containing the word "Packard", but wading through the results can be quite a chore. Yet, there are several titles that are not only "out of print", but downright obscure. To provide a single point of reference to collect information about these books, we have established The Packard Bookshelf. As a number that uniquely identifies each title and edition, the International Standard Book Number (ISBN) may be the single, most important piece of information for locating books. However, there are some books that have no ISBN - perhaps because they were either published privately or before that numbering standard was implemented. You can still search for those by their title, author, and publisher, but images of the front cover or dust jacket, where provided, will help "book spotters". Titles are listed below - alphabetically. If you have an edition that isnt already listed, and can supply the basic details, an image, and a brief, yet objective synopsis, click the "Add NEW Book..." link that follows this introduction. If you would like to leave a personal critique for an existing entry, click the "Add" link next to the Comments flag , just below its synopsis. However, you must be signed-in to add (or edit) your contributions. |

Automobile Quarterly, Volume 1, Number 3 Author: L. Scott Bailey, Editor Format: Hardback, 104 pages ISBN: N/A Publisher: Automobile Quarterly (Fall 1962) Status: Out of Print List Price: N/A While technically not a book but a periodical and thus perhaps something that really doesn't belong here, this publication is just so historic and relevant to Packard that it shouldn't be omitted. The volume, published at the time that the Studebaker-Packard Corp. chose to eliminate the word Packard from their corporate name, is essentially a very eloquent eulogy to Packard. This issue contains several articles not related to Packard, but the keynote article (25 pages), "Packard - A Great Name Passes On", written by Tom Mahoney, includes a brief history, some excellent photos for which Automobile Quarterly is reknown, and some wonderful prose which may even bring a tear to the eye of the reader. - Owen_Dyneto | ![]()

Fifties Stylish American Cars (A Decade of Dazzle) Author: Henry Rasmussen Format: Hardcover, 128 pages ISBN: 087938249X Publisher: Motorbooks International (1987) Status: OUT OF PRINT List Price: N/A While this book is not at all exclusively dedicated to Packard, it features a stunning 1955 Caribbean, in color - purchased new by Howard Hughes for his (then and, in fact, last) wife, actress Jean Peters. Illustrated Packard Buyers Guide: All Packard Cars and Commercial Vehicles, 1899 to 1958 Author: Richard M. Langworth Format: Paperback, 160 pages ISBN: 0879384271 Publisher: Motorbooks International (January 1, 1992) Status: OUT OF PRINT List Price: $16.95 Written by the highly-respected and long-time editor of PAC's quarterly magazine, The Packard Cormorant, there is no better beginning reference than this title for anyone who is new to Packard automobiles and is considering buying one. You might find this title in circulation at larger libraries with a substantial automotive selection, but keep in mind that vehicle pricing is going to be sorely out of date with this original edition. The asking price for mint used copies is so high that you have to wonder why a second, updated edition isn't forthcoming. - BH | ![]()

Images of America - Packard Motor Car Company Author: Evan P. Ide with Foreword by Joseph S. Freeman Format: Soft Cover, 128 pages ISBN: 0-785-1208-7 Publisher: Arcadia Publishing (2003) Status: Out of Print List Price: $19.99 This is a book of rare Packard photographs with descriptive captions. Roderick Blood traded a Packard automobile for a filing cabinet salvaged from the PMCC when it closed its doors in 1957. Blood’s cabinet containing photographs, company correspondence, manuscripts, and letters from James Ward Packard was given to the Larz Anderson Auto Museum upon Blood’s death in 1966. The author, the museum's curator, recently rediscovered the Blood-Packard collection and found it contained factory photographs of Packard automobiles that were thought to have been lost forever. These photos are the subject of the book. The photos cover the periods from the company’s beginning in 1899 in Warren, Ohio to the 1930s. A short chapter is devoted to racing Packards. It is a library must for anyone interested in the marque. - JW | ![]()

Packard (Crestline) Author: George H. Dammann & James A. Wren Format: Hardcover, 448 pages ISBN: 0760301042 Publisher: Motorbooks International (June 1, 1996) Status: OUT OF PRINT List Price: $39.95 Though some people may nitpick on the format, content, and depth of these books, I fondly remember discovering the Crestline series on other brands, back in the late 1970s. Some 20 years later, they finally put out an edition on Packard. While the modern cover treatment isn't quite as lavish, the layout has a decidedly different feel to it. The pages aren't the glossy stock that I admired in those editions from decades earlier, but this one is all about Packards and every year is covered. NOTE: Cover is engraved in a bright chrome-like color that scans dark. - BH | ![]()

Packard Automobile Company - Tools and Jacks Author: Donald E. Reedy and Danny D. Shaub Format: Hardback, 61 pages ISBN: None Publisher: Self-published (2008) Status: In Print List Price: $50 + $5 S&H If you have an interest in jacks and kit hand tools (those tools that would have come with the car) this little publication should prove interesting. Much of it was not new to me, but then I've also collected this kind of information for some years. But I suspect for most Packard folks and especially those new to the hobby it will be new information. The "book" is called a work-in-progress by the authors, indicating new information may become available over time. The publication is actually a 3-ring binder with the contents printed, both in color and B&W on heavy card-stock paper. There are illustrations of most Packard jacks from the mid-teens thru 1956 often with manufacturer's name and/or number indicated, and of hand tools like hammers, screwdrivers, open end and monkey wrenches, tire gauges, ignition wrenches, water pump packing nut wrenches, etc. There is a short section at the end of modern items for sale like tool and jack bags and the like. - Owen_Dyneto | ![]()

Packard: A History in Ads ... 1903-1956 Author: Gwilym G. Griffiths Format: Hardback, 72 pages ISBN: Libr of Congress No. 72-141464 Publisher: Gwilym G. Griffiths, Timonium, Maryland (1970) Status: Out of Print List Price: N/A Griffiths' self-published 8 1/2" X 11" volume gathers 65 ads that give a visual history of Packard Motor Company as it presented itself to the consuming public for nearly sixty years. A brief paragraph accompanies each ad with history and comment about the ad, its time, Packard events, and world events that surrounded it. Unfortunately, this volume is printed in B&W. Readers will need to find other sources (some on this Packard Info website) to enjoy the colors of 1926-1956 Packard renderings and artwork. Packard was a consistent advertiser in the Saturday Evening Post from 1903 to 1956. Color ads were introduced in 1926 by the Austin Bement agency. They used "fine art paintings and beautiful car renderings" throughout the 20s and 30s. The Young & Rubicam agency represented Packard from 1932 until 1952. They introduced the One-Twenty models, the Packard Six, and the Clipper. Griffiths includes a 3 page listing of over 1500 ads by year, month and page location as they appeared in the Saturday Evening Post, Collier's Magazine, Fortune Magazine, Country Life, National Geographic, and Holiday Magazine. Some of these deserve posting separately. Enjoy! DanL - 41ParPack | ![]()

Packard: A History of the Motor Car and the Company Author: Martin, Bradley, et al. Format: Hardback, 828 pages ISBN: 0915038110 Publisher: Automobile Quarterly (June 1, 1978) Status: In Print List Price: $75.00 While other books dedicated to the marque have been published before and since, none of them come close to the scope and quality of writing of this one. It's not surprising, then, that many refer to this book as the Packard enthusiast's "bible". This entry represents the second printing of the first, general edition, and there have been multiple printings. Yet, the general edition was preceded by an expensive limited-edition (ISBN 0525174397) that was bound in red leatherette, with gilt edges, an engraved Packard emblem on cover and spine, presented in a matching slip case, and accompanied by numbered certificate of authenticity. Although the more affordable general edition actually fell out of print, Automobile Quarterly issued a new edition/printing of this title in 2003 (ISBN 0971146810). - BigKev | ![]()

This is followed by a section on the actual nuts-and-bolts of how bodies were designed and manufactured with some detail on interior trim, top materials, paint and color, brightwork, and chassis modifications. If you're interested in this type of history, this is a wonderful book. Illustrated of course. Sorry, the dust jacket is long since lost, the photo is of the title page. - Owen_Dyneto | ![]()

The Fall of the Packard Motor Car Company Author: James A. Ward Format: Hardcover, 324 pages ISBN: 0804724571 Publisher: Stanford University Press (September 1, 1995) Status: In-Print List Price: $60.00 Few books can hold a candle to the Kimes/AQ History..., but it never adequately answered one question that is asked by many: "How could a company that built such magnificent automobiles go out of business?" That's where this title picks up. This book wasn't written by a group of loyal enthusiasts, but based on in-depth, well-balanced, research. Legend has it that Ward's treatise was so highly regarded by the academic public at the time that many business colleges made it required reading. That may very well be why it was later released in paperback (ISBN 0804731659). - BH | ![]()

The Packard 1942-1962 Author: Nathaniel T. Dawes Format: Hardcover, 220 pages ISBN: 0498013537 Publisher: A.S. Barnes & Co. (1975) Status: OUT OF PRINT List Price: N/A Prior to 1978, this may have been the best account of Packard's postwar era that was available in a single volume, and it also covers a bit of the military product. It includes plenty of photos and renderings (both factory and new), including some concept cars. Also included are two appendices that feature model identification, price, production info, and specifications for the 21st through 56th Series - picking up where the Turnquist book left off. Additional appendices touch on capacities, basic tune-up info, engine electrical equipment numbers, and grille/year identification. NOTE: This example came without dust jacket, and the cover is plain black. The image provided here is from title page. - BH | ![]()

The Packard Guide Author: Dr. Robert D. A small companion publication, soft-cover and spiral bound and titled "The Packard Identification Guide" is a useful and handy reference for identifying chassis and body style numbers, wheelbases and engines, again for the period 1899-1958. - Owen_Dyneto

The Packard Story (The Car and the Company) Author: Robert E. Turnquist Format: Hardcover, 286 pages ISBN: N/A Publisher: Somerset Press ((undated)) Status: OUT OF PRINT List Price: N/A This may be the first book published (post-mortem) on the marque, as I've heard that it dates back to 1965. It presents a history, technically, through 1958, but emphasis is on the prewar years. The post-war years are addressed in just one chapter (just 13 pages), but there are several postwar concept and prototype cars featured among the many photos. Also, a single appendix - consisting of nearly 90 pages - lists production figures, prices and basic specification for body styles, but only through the 20th Series. This book appears to have gone through several printings and more than one edition and publisher (and ISBN). The title is still available for purchase from Hibernia Auto Restorations. - BH | ![]()
